Joanna Powell is an associate in the Oakland office. She practices in the firm’s Litigation, Student Services & Special Education, Labor & Employment, and Charter Schools Practice Groups.
Before joining the firm, Ms. Powell served as an associate at a large, international law firm, where her practice focused on education impact litigation. She worked on such major cases as Vergara v. California, Bain v. CTA, and HFT v. HISD. In addition, she clerked for the Hon. Elizabeth D. Laporte in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.
Ms. Powell earned her Juris Doctor from New York University School of Law as the Teach For America/LeBoeuf Lamb Emerging Law Leaders Scholar. During law school, she served as Managing Editor of the N.Y.U. Review of Law & Social Change and Chair of the Education Law & Policy Society. Prior to law school, Ms. Powell taught second grade in the Bronx through Teach For America. She earned her B.A. in Political Science, cum laude and with distinction in the major, from Yale University.
Ms. Powell serves as Vice President of the board of the Thomas Edison Charter Academy in San Francisco and volunteers as a tutor with SMART. She enjoys running half marathons, singing in a beauty shop quartet, and spending time with her rescue dog.
