Tara Giery

Practicing statewide, Tara Giery advises California school districts and other public agency clients in the areas of business and facilities, governance and leadership, data privacy, Title IX athletics equity, and charter school oversight, and helps them stay compliant with everchanging laws and regulations.

On the transactional side of her practice, Tara drafts and reviews contracts and other documents pertaining to sales, purchases, and leasing of facilities and properties, always ensuring that the document language protects clients on many fronts. She also helps school districts with requests for proposals (RFPs) and other aspects of the bidding process.

School boards often turn to Tara when they have questions stemming from the Brown Act, legislation that guarantees the public’s right to attend and participate in meetings of public and governmental organizations. In addition, they rely on her counsel when responding to records requests under the California Public Records Act.

Tara also assists clients with their oversight of charter schools that are authorized within their boundaries, enabling districts to navigate issues while preserving the important relationship between the two entities. Because charter schools didn’t exist in California until the 1990s, charter school-related legal issues provide little legal precedence. Tara takes a practical, open-minded approach to all matters and stays informed about the constant changes shaping this relatively recent and growing practice area.
