Seattle Public Schools joined several Washington school districts, as well as New York City Public Schools, Los Angeles Unified School District, and Philadelphia Public Schools in adopting a new digital curriculum for geometry and algebra classes. Seattle Public Schools will utilize Illustrative Mathematics, a curriculum that is described as an “innovative problem-based” curriculum “designed to energize math classrooms and equip students with critical skills, understandings, and practices that can benefit them for a lifetime.” With this curriculum, students will primarily learn math and take tests utilizing district-issued laptops.
While some teachers have reported challenges with the some components of the digital curriculum, such as auto-grading and difficulty drawing geometry symbols, others have noted benefits that include the ability to tailor assignments to individual student needs and access to videos and interactive simulations. Additionally, the digital curriculum helps engage students by incorporating real-word scenarios that involve math.
