What can I solve for you?

I help school district leaders calmly process and work through complex problems and challenges, as well as provide coaching and mentoring for each leader to achieve their best work. Leaders can get tied up in issues with those who are most vocal and potentially lose sight of who we are here to serve – the students. I can assist in untangling those issues and providing prospective and solutions.

What's it like to work with me?

To work with me is to collaborate with both a natural teacher and problem-solver. You’ll get someone who listens carefully, assesses situations quickly and offers actionable advice that is open, honest and direct—and always student-centered. I will support and empower you to tackle complex challenges and to navigate even the most stressful, sensitive and public-facing situations. I’ve likely experienced the same issues in my own decades-long career, so I won’t simply propose solutions; I will actively help you implement strategies in ways that brings clarity and calm.

Overview

Dr. Julie Mitchell brings nearly four decades of experience as a respected leader in public education, with an extensive background in instructional leadership across all grade levels, culminating in her ten years serving as Superintendent of the Rowland Unified School District.

As a coach and mentor, she now partners with boards of education, superintendents and assistant superintendents to craft the modern and technologically innovative learning environments that will equip students to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive global society.

Julie gives both sitting and aspiring school leaders the practical tools they need to effectively make decisions and govern, while simultaneously avoiding blind spots and unintended consequences. She supports onboarding for new board members, conducts governance workshops and fosters effective communication between boards and administrators, helping them to align on shared goals and achieve the outcomes they collectively desire.

She is particularly adept in crisis management and communication, as well as the full range of human resources and labor relations issues—including contract negotiations, recruitment and hiring, employee evaluation and discipline, and compliance with evolving laws. She has guided organizations through reductions in force, budget planning and position control processes, providing clarity and direction during complex transitions. Once recognized as California’s Negotiator of the Year, she has a distinguished history of working collaboratively with labor groups to strengthen district operations.

After School

I’m married and have three kids, and enjoy spending time with my family. I love to travel (discovering and learning about new places), but also to vacation (which I view more as lying on a beach and reading). Both can certainly be accomplished in one trip. Having recently retired from a full-time Superintendent position, I am having fun pulling more hobbies and recreation into the equation.
