As the dust settles around the initial explosion of AI technology, we are primed now to undertake the work of building infrastructure around a tool with great potential. However, we are also in need of fundamentals upon which we can all agree. In looking at the integration of AI in education, some see risk, some see reward but the key is to see both existing together. Industries are embracing and mitigating risks because of the perceived great rewards in efficiency and cost in integrating AI into their regular courses of business. Education is no different. In education, some teachers are elated about integrating the latest and greatest tools to engage their students, others are terrified and confused. Teachers are concerned about the implications on instruction while administrators and district leaders have data privacy on their minds. The informative new McKinsey survey linked below dives into where AI stands across the globe, giving us a glimpse into what we may expect to see regarding risks and rewards over the coming months and years.

Our previous research has found that there are several elements of governance that can help in scaling gen AI use responsibly, yet few respondents report having these risk-related practices in place. For example, just 18 percent say their organizations have an enterprise-wide council or board with the authority to make decisions involving responsible AI governance, and only one-third say gen AI risk awareness and risk mitigation controls are required skill sets for technical talent.
