AI Surveillance in Schools: Balancing Innovation with Responsibility

As schools explore ways to enhance safety and prevent violence on campus, more districts are turning to artificial intelligence tools capable of detecting potential threats—such as brandished weapons—through real-time camera monitoring. These technologies, already proven useful in commercial settings, offer promising capabilities for reducing response times and improving situational awareness during critical incidents.

However, implementing such systems in educational settings comes with unique considerations. Unlike commercial buildings, schools are subject to strict privacy laws such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). It is essential that any surveillance tool deployed in a school complies with these regulations to protect student data and maintain trust with families.

Additionally, school leaders should closely review contract terms when partnering with AI surveillance vendors. Important questions to ask include: Who is liable if the system fails or produces a false positive? How is student footage handled and stored? What protocols are in place for confirming alerts before law enforcement is notified?

While these technologies represent an important advancement in school security—districts must approach adoption thoughtfully. A thorough vetting process, clear governance policies, and legal oversight are all critical to ensure that the use of AI supports safety without introducing unintended risks or liabilities.

“School officials are alerted as quickly as three to five seconds after a brandished weapon is detected [using AI surveillance].”
