Microsoft, the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), and Anthropic have released a new set of AI privacy standards for K-12 schools that is likely to become a frequent reference point in conversations between districts and AI vendors. As additional companies participate in related certification and standards efforts, the document may help shape expectations across the education technology marketplace.

School leaders reviewing the standards should note that they are voluntary and do not include an independent enforcement mechanism. Instead, compliance is largely tied to the participating companies’ existing contractual commitments and Terms of Service. Even so, the framework is likely to influence how responsible AI practices are discussed and evaluated in the years ahead.
