The U.S. Department of Education’s (ED) Office for Civil Rights (OCR) has found that San Jose State University (SJSU) violated Title IX by allowing a trans woman to compete on the women’s volleyball team and access female-only facilities, which OCR said denied women of equal educational opportunities and benefits. SJSU further compounded matters when it retaliated against female students and an assistant coach who denounced the school’s gender identity policies. The university has 10 days from January 28 to accept the proposed resolution agreement. The U.S. Supreme Court is scheduled to rule this summer on the legality of transgender athlete bans in schools. F3 Law will continue to follow this case and other cases involving transgender athletes as this issue evolves.
