With teacher shortages on the rise, California schools are seeing the biggest impact in its bilingual education and transitional kindergarten students.

Nearly 60% of California children under the age of 6 live in households where a language other than English is spoken, underscoring the importance of bilingual education initiatives.

The passage of Proposition 227 in 1998 however, eliminated programs for bilingual teachers, exacerbating the challenge of recruiting and retaining bilingual educators.

As class sizes decrease and the teacher to student ratio increases, the demand for teachers is rising at a rate quicker than schools can recruit.
