Dr. Vincent (“Vince”) Matthews guides school district leadership smoothly through strategic planning, development and other fiduciary matters, and helps them to either increase revenue or make necessary budgetary cuts. He also mentors new superintendents on everything from their contracts, setting up their first meetings and working effectively with their boards.

While serving as superintendent in two large urban California districts would already be notable, Vince has held that role in four over a 16-year span — including at San Jose Unified and, most recently, San Francisco Unified. In two of those roles, in Oakland and Inglewood, Vince was appointed as the county (previously state) administrator, selected to come in and temporarily take over for those superintendents and boards, to help the districts right their ships and restructure after they were unable to make payroll.

These experiences and appointments leave Vince uniquely positioned to help California school districts, now facing unprecedented new funding challenges, to keep an eye on their bottom lines while continuing to provide high-quality education. As he has worked with many of the districts now being financially hit the hardest, Vince is particularly passionate about this cause.

In addition to his years as a Superintendent, Vince also brings 18 years of educational and administrative experience—as an elementary school teacher, an elementary principal, a high school assistant principal and a middle school principal—leaving him with a valuable big picture perspective. In January of 2020, he began as an adjunct faculty member in the Educational Administration Program teaching prospective administration candidates at his alma mater San Francisco State University.
