What can I solve for you?

With my extensive knowledge and expertise in negotiating real estate and energy agreements, I can protect a school district's property interests and support projects that benefit schools. If the district's property ownership has become unclear over the years, I can help clarify and correct the problems.

What's it like to work with me?

I am passionately devoted to my clients' projects. I enjoy unraveling difficult real estate issues. I love working on complex real estate and energy projects and I have extensive experience eliminating roadblocks to the desired outcome. I'm easy to talk to, optimistic, and open to the creation of unusual solutions. I take a creative, problem-solving approach to serving client needs.

“Education is the soul of society as it passes from one generation to another.”

G. K. Chesterton

Overview

Kathleen J. McKee, an experienced real estate attorney, represents school districts and public agencies in all aspects of real estate, business and facilities law, including property acquisition and disposal, site selection, financing and construction. She advises clients throughout the state on property negotiations, purchase agreements, leases, land use and entitlement issues, environmental issues, including CEQA and NEPA, and alternative energy projects. She served as co-chair of the firm’s Business, Facilities, Real Estate, Construction & Energy Practice Group for nine years.

She is especially interested in finding ways for school districts and public agencies to take full advantage of their property assets, including effective use of surplus property. Kathleen successfully completed a multi-year project involving the environmental clean-up of a piece of surplus property that was then ground leased to a developer for affordable residential housing, thus providing a benefit to the community and a source of income for the district. She has guided school districts on crafting joint use agreements that allowed an effective use of surplus property.

Kathleen served as a member of Green Technology’s California Summit and K-12 Advisory Boards. She is a recognized leader in energy conservation legal matters, especially matters involving energy efficiency and solar generation. She has completed over 35 solar projects, ranging from small, one site projects to large multi-site projects combining carport, roof and stand-alone solar structures on 51 sites. She assists school districts and public agencies throughout the state with solar projects, from RFP creation through contract negotiations and preparation of all documents, including financing and rebates.

Prior to representing school districts and public agencies, Kathleen represented private commercial property owners in the acquisition, financing and development of commercial properties for use in the biotech industry.

I'm an avid reader of murder mysteries and attend mystery writers' conferences like the Left Coast Crime and Bouchercon to hear some of my favorite writers – Laurie R. King, Robert Crais, Anne Hillerman – talk about the writing process and their latest novels.

I'm also a passionate gardener with a yard landscaped in succulents (to save water), but a yard that also includes raised beds for annual flowers and tomatoes. Color and edibles in the garden are crucial!
